Data Science Intern in Climate Modeling

Qualification: Currently Pursuing Masters in Atmospheric\ Climate\ Environmental Science and Geosciences and other related fields
Location: Remote in U.S. and INDIA

About the Opportunity

Are you passionate about understanding climate change and its far-reaching consequences? Do you have a keen interest in exploring how extreme events like hurricanes, cyclones, forest fires, and coastal flooding and disaster models are modeled and analyzed? If so, this internship is an excellent opportunity to combine your research-oriented mindset and technical skills to make a meaningful impact in climate science.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Data Science Intern specializing in climate modeling, with a particular focus on hurricanes, cyclones, forest fires, and coastal flooding. This role is designed for individuals who want to expand their knowledge, contribute to climate research, and enhance their hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools and datasets.

What we're looking for?

Strong Fundamentals in Climate Science
  • A solid understanding of climate systems, the science behind climate change, and its impacts.
  • Familiarity with key climate datasets and tools.
Research-Oriented Mindset
  • An eagerness to explore, question, and analyze climate phenomena.
  • Enthusiasm for studying extreme events like hurricanes, cyclones, forest fires, and coastal flooding, along with their implications for our environment.
Technical Skills
  • Proficiency in Python and R for data analysis, modeling, and visualization.
  • Hands-on experience with GIS tools like ArcPy (preferred) or other spatial analysis software.
  • A basic understanding of machine learning concepts and statistical methods (good to have but not mandatory).
Understanding of Climate Models
  • Familiarity with different types of climate models used for simulating hurricanes, cyclones, forest fires, and coastal flooding.
  • While deep expertise is not expected, a basic awareness of how these models work and their role in predicting extreme events is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze and process climate datasets to extract meaningful insights.
  • Work on modeling projects related to hurricanes, cyclones, forest fires, and coastal flooding, focusing on data visualization and interpretation.
  • Collaborate with the team to understand and utilize various climate models.
  • Perform spatial and temporal analysis of climate data using tools like Python, R, and GIS.
  • Support research efforts to assess the impacts of climate change on extreme weather and natural hazard patterns.
  • Contribute to documentation and present findings in an organized and meaningful way.

Who Should Apply?

We are seeking candidates who are:

  • Passionate about climate science, especially extreme weather events and natural hazards such as hurricanes, cyclones, forest fires, and coastal flooding and other disasters.
  • Curious, research-oriented, and excited to learn about climate models.
  • Technically strong with Python and R programming skills and open to exploring GIS tools like ArcPy.
  • Currently pursuing Masters in Atmospheric\Climate\Environmental Sciences\Geosciences and related fields.
  • Team players with a collaborative mindset and strong communication skills.

Why Join Us?
